BOXING TOURNAMENT FOR DOMESTIC HELPERS ON BOXING DAY

Short Feature

Some of Hong Kong’s boldest domestic helpers slugged it out at the Muay Thai Fighters Club One-Day Tournament on Boxing Day on December 26, 2021. The showcase event is meant to empower one of the city’s most overlooked communities, with most of the participants having spent their Sundays, their only days off, for several months to train for the tournament. A local Muay Thai gym has been offering the helpers low-cost classes as well as a venue to socialise with their community and de-stress as Covid-19 has limited their activities and prevented most from being able to travel to their home countries to visit families.

FROM ONLINE TO ONSTAGE: HK YOUTUBERS ‘TRIAL & ERROR’ MAKE A SPLASH

Short Feature

The Hong Kong YouTube channel Trial & Error has become all the rage in the Cantonese-speaking world with its offering of comedy skits, parodies, music videos and game shows. Founded by Hong Kong actor Neo Yau Hawk-sau, along with Hui Yin and So Chi-ho, the channel is famous for delivering shows using clever wordplay with Cantonese slang, nonsensical gags and deadpan humour. It has also found success offline, staging two sold-out live shows in Hong Kong in October 2021.

CHINESE WHITE DOLPHINS IN CHINA'S SHANTOU WATERS

Feature

Zheng Ruiqiang is a marine biologist based at Shantou University in southern China. He’s been studying Indo-Pacific humpbacks for the past ten years. Often referred to as the Chinese white dolphin, the species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List. The populations that still survive along China’s busy coastline are particularly threatened, despite their importance in Chinese culture as a “treasure of the sea”. In this interview, Zheng shares his concerns for the group’s future and the measures needed to protect them.

Tai Kwun on Hong Kong's Hollywood Road is a popular arts and shopping hub that attracts tourists and locals alike. But the complex was once a place no one wanted to visit. It was the first prison in colonial Hong Kong, a complex that started with a few cells before it was expanded into a law and justice centre for the city over the years from 1841 until 2006. Tai Kwun was more recently redeveloped into the cultural hub that still preserves details of its rich history and culture dating back nearly 180 years.

As part of my master's degree final assessment, I was involved in a four week project where we produced our own news roundup every week in our university's in-house studio. We took up a different role every week. 
In the final week, I was the line producer in which I was responsible for allocating tasks to the team, to prepare news content for the final news roundup recording. I overlooked the pre-recorded segments, and monitored the as-lives and news packages to ensure they are ready for the shoot. I also arranged the rundown of the show and coordinated with the director to ensure a smooth rundown.

A HONG KONG TRANSGENDER MAN'S JOURNEY TO BECOMING HIS TRUE SELF

Zephyrus grew up feeling something wasn't quite right. During his medical degree studies, he decided to open up to his university counsellor about his gender dysphoria. That made him feel more at ease afterwards as he talked to his peers and family. Fast forward to January 2022, when he decided to fly to Thailand for a sex reassignment surgery. This life-changing decision has led to a new self, as he unlocks and pursues some of the long-held wishes on his bucket list.

The Hong Kong government is forging ahead with a plan to improve Tsui Keng, an agricultural district north of the city’s urban areas. A QUIET JUNE 4TH ANNIVERSARY

Hong Kong was once the only place on Chinese soil where large-scale commemorations were held to mourn those killed in the June 4, 1989, crackdown on protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Since 1990, football pitches in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park were used as a venue for tens of thousands of people to gather for annual candlelight vigils. Such activities were effectively banned in 2020 by authorities enforcing rules to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and in 2022 the park was sealed off by police.

HK COVID-19 CASES REACH 1 MILLION

Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong officially surpassed the 1 million mark on March 18, 2022, as the city recorded 20,082 new infections. Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said a day earlier that her government was re-evaluating strict social distancing rules in place since January that includes flight bans to nine countries and suspension of face-to-face learning in schools. Lam said adjustments to those rules could be announced in a few days, but a government advisor has told the Post the city could ease its restrictions in 6-8 weeks if it met two key conditions.

HK GYMS STRUGGLE TO STAY AFLOAT AS FITNESS CHAINS QUIT CITY OVER COVID CLOSURE

Fitness First announced its permanent closure in Hong Kong on March 15, 2022, citing the prolonged social distancing measures that have required all fitness centres to close. It's the second gym chain after Goji Studios to close for good due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Gyms and other businesses have been operating on and off since the start of the pandemic, but the latest closures in January, which are set to expire on April 20, have been the longest. The restrictions have left gym owners scrambling to find ways to stay in business.

HK NGO OFFERS EMERGENCY SUPPLIES DELIVERY TO ASYLUM SEEKERS AMID LOCKDOWN FEARS

A Hong Kong NGO has been offering emergency supply delivery for asylum seekers and refugees who are struggling to stock up amid fears of a lockdown when the city conducts its universal testing for Covid-19. Ahead of the planned mass testing, shelves have been emptied in shops and supermarkets over panic-buying across the city. Asylum seekers and refugees receive a monthly government subsidy of HK$1,200 (US$154) in food cards, which can only be used at one designated supermarket. NGO Christian Action, based in Hong Kong’s Chungking Mansions, received an overwhelming response from its Facebook appeal, with people from all walks of life donating various supplies, from food to Covid-19 self-test kits.

BREAKING DOWN OF HK'S DYNAMIC ZERO COVID-19 STRATEGY

‘LARGE SCALE LOCKDOWNS’ AND MASS TESTING EXPECTED IN HONG KONG

The Hong Kong government is expected to impose a “large-scale lockdown” when it requires all residents to complete three coronavirus tests as part of its universal screening drive in the second half of this month, the Post has learned. ‘EXPONENTIAL’ OUTBREAK OF OMICRON TRIGGERS LOCKDOWNS IN HK HOUSING BLOCKS

Hong Kong health authorities have ordered a five-day lockdown for a second block of flats in a public housing estate building where at least 105 Covid-19 cases were found during mass testing that continued late on January 22, 2022. The outbreak involved at least four buildings of the Kwai Chung Estate in the city’s southwestern New Territories. CHINESE WHITE DOLPHINS IN CHINA'S SHANTOU WATERS

Zheng Ruiqiang is a marine biologist based at Shantou University in southern China. He’s been studying Indo-Pacific humpbacks for the past ten years. Often referred to as the Chinese white dolphin, the species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List. The populations that still survive along China’s busy coastline are particularly threatened, despite their importance in Chinese culture as a “treasure of the sea”. In this interview, Zheng shares his concerns for the group’s future and the measures needed to protect them.

Once a person is convicted of a crime that requires a custodial sentence in Hong Kong, he or she will be sent to one of the city’s 28 correctional facilities. Hong Kong prisons are divided into three security levels, but what is common among all of them is a strict set of rules and routines prisoners must follow during their time of incarceration. We talked to people who spent time inside Hong Kong’s prisons to get first-hand accounts of what life is like inside.

Tai Kwun on Hong Kong's Hollywood Road is a popular arts and shopping hub that attracts tourists and locals alike. But the complex was once a place no one wanted to visit. It was the first prison in colonial Hong Kong, a complex that started with a few cells before it was expanded into a law and justice centre for the city over the years from 1841 until 2006. Tai Kwun was more recently redeveloped into the cultural hub that still preserves details of its rich history and culture dating back nearly 180 years.

As part of my master's degree final assessment, I was involved in a four week project where we produced our own news roundup every week in our university's in-house studio. We took up a different role every week. 
In the final week, I was the line producer in which I was responsible for allocating tasks to the team, to prepare news content for the final news roundup recording. I overlooked the pre-recorded segments, and monitored the as-lives and news packages to ensure they are ready for the shoot. I also arranged the rundown of the show and coordinated with the director to ensure a smooth rundown.
